EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE

Have you ever talked with your manager about a problem and he just does not seem to understand why the issue is so important to you? Have you ever presented an idea, a proposal, or a new company rule to your subordinates and it’s met with absolute confusion? Or maybe you have been in an argument with your colleagues when someone suddenly accuses you of not listening to what they are saying at all? What is missing here? The answer is effective communication.

OVERVIEW

Essential to all organizational functions, communication is the process of exchanging information and common understanding between persons and groups of people. Effective communication in the workplace is crucial to creating and sustaining good working relationships between employees and departments, as well as productivity and profitability, in organizations. Communicating properly is a major challenge for almost all organizations, big and small, private or public. More often than not, in our rush to prove ourselves, we send and receive messages through our subjective lenses. That is, one person expresses his interpretation of the message and the person he is communicating with hears her own interpretation of the message. This could lead to miscommunication. Communication, if not done right, can lead to confusion, animosity, and a miserable workplace environment.

This course will introduce participants to the nature, elements, and functions of communication. More importantly, the course will provide participants with practical strategies to effectively communicate within the organization and with clients in a way that responds positively to individual differences. It will require participants to practice and perform communicative activities in various work situations, develop ideas appropriately, and effectively communicate them to their target audience to instigate action.

The course aims to help participants develop their aptitude for expressing their thoughts, values and beliefs, experiences, and passions in an intelligent, affecting, and confident manner. Skills developed in the course will ensure each participant’s ability to truly effectively communicate in the workplace.
